Martin Hackett: Writer of Words

There was a time that I considered myself a writer. Sorry, capital 'W': Writer. Now I'm a bit more humble about the matter. I'm still a writer, but I don't have the sense of linguistic entitlement that I'd felt before.

The links below will take you to various things that I've written. Some are good. Some are abysmal. Some need a lot of work. When I was younger, I didn't love the idea of editing or rewriting. I was a firm believer in one and done. I didn't always love the idea of feedback; at the very least, I didn't take constructive direction well. This mentality shows in my work.

There are some pieces that I very much agree with to this day. There are others that have surfaced as problematic at best, offensive at worst. I don't want to hide who I was, because I feel that it diminishes my progress in becoming who I am. I can't change my past, but I can damned sure work toward being a better human in the future.

I'm presenting these works 'as is' for archival purposes. Eventually I may add annotations to help explain where my mind may have been at the time of creation, or at least, where my mind is now (particularly when the writing is very different from my current views).

Articles

There once was a website called Nutkinland. It was an online community of role-playing game enthusiasts that formed as an offshoot of another site (Eric Noah's Unofficial D&D 3rd Edition News) and, during one of its many iterations, attempted to provide legitimate gaming content. In that spirit, I wrote the following articles under the pseudonym 'Brian Kutcher.' This was in 2003. It's now twenty years later, and with reading through them, I realize that some of the intended humor is problematic.

Essays

Below are links to a collection of essays that I've written over the years. I don't currently have a particular order for them. Most of them are old, because honestly, I'm fixing up my mess of a website. Perhaps if I can keep my ADHD focused on keeping this maintained enough, I'll regularly update it with work that I'm doing now (although that's mostly academic works since I'm pursuing my bachelor's degree).
